The ambitions of the project are three-fold: Offering a permeable corner to access the institutional Quad from church / gold streets; A new student datum on the roof of Kerr Hall, and a student residence above Kerr Hall.

The Porous Urban corner is achieved by selectively carving into Kerr Hall, offering a new role and image of the institute in the city. The new datum is a public urban space hosting programs ranging from cafes and bars to ice skating rinks. The strategy for housing is to minimize the living / sleeping spaces for each student. The saved square footage now affords completely private (bed)rooms for each student and maximized communal spaces for students to share. The planning strategy allows for communal spaces of various sizes and characteristics only loosely programmed – the modular, metabolic nature of bedroom units and communal areas being sensitive to the rapidly changing needs of student housing and the city and – a truly adaptive architecture. In the way numerous pixels create an image, the three dimensional pixels of this project comprise a positive living experience and sense of community.
