Shipping Container Infill Housing

This residence will form a comforting and safe environment for students to interact in, which will translate into a community where students will have an easier time meeting their peers, in order to feel more welcomed to the city.

The idea for this student housing project was to create a space that would tailor to the needs of international and exchange students. Going to university can be hard as it is, especially when you are being submerged into a new environment. This residence will form a comforting and safe environment for students to interact in, which will translate into a community where students will have an easier time meeting their peers, in order to feel more welcomed to the city.

What makes this residence affordable is that the form will be made completely out of shipping containers. This makes the units easy to build, as the units are essentially prefabricated. The structure would also be easy to produce, as the shipping containers would just be stacked upon according to the student’s capacity. The residence will consist of single user units, each with its own bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, living space and private balcony. For every one shipping container, it will house 2 units. However, there is the potential for variety within the space, to either create one unit where two people can share (two bedrooms, one bathroom, one kitchenette, one living room, two balconies), or one unit for one person to take up one entire shipping container. This allows for flexibility to meet the individual’s needs. The main shared space will be created from 6 shipping containers placed side by side, sitting below the units. The shared space will be split into sections. The first is a quiet study room, with shared and single user desks. Next is a kitchenette and dining/ entertainment area. Food is a big part of human interaction. That is why the kitchenette will be set up so that students can cook meals and eat together. The dining will double as an entertainment space. The set up will have couches and a television, which will save space as opposed to having both a dining and living room. Finally, there will be a café space at the bottom of the building, so that students have the opportunity to earn some money in a place that would be most convenient for them. They can engage with other peers or neighbors, while the profits from the cafe would be used for the building maintenance and give a part-time job opportunity to students.

School can be very stressful at times, so the structure main goal for the structure is to create a space that evokes a calm and relaxing feeling, while building upon community and familiarity for the international/ exchange students. Each unit will have its own private garden. The garden is meant to create a calming effect one coming into the residence, while bringing natural greenery which the city may lack. The shared spaces will also act as places of community, where students from all different walks of life (from schools, cultures, genders etc.) can come together and find solidarity in the space. Some other features of this student residence will include the fact that its site will be within a short distance from downtown Toronto. This makes it accessible for students of UofT, OCAD, Ryerson etc. It will be close to public transit, however, the residence will also house its own private bike parking.

This student residence is meant to benefit international and exchange students. One advantage to the student residence is that it creates a sense of community between these students. The building will be a place where newcomers can come together, can interact with their peers, and help each other out to adjust in the city. The setup of each unit is will also be like a “hotel setting”, which can play to the advantage of the student. The unit will be suitable for users to stay during the school year; it will be comfortable for the students to stay in, enough storage to hold the essentials etc. However, when the time comes for the student to go back home, they don’t have to worry about having a sublet rent out the space, or have to pay rent even when the space is unused.
